Miracle #5: "I can breathe now"

Notice anything different about this photo?

No oxygen!

And his sats are 97%!

When Rowan first came down to the PICU, a little over 3 weeks ago, he ended up having to be intubated.  He remained on the vent for 5 or 6 days, and was then moved to a BiPAP machine instead.  We tried to transition him to high flow nasal cannula, for several days after that, unsuccessfully.  Then we tried multiple masks and nasal pillows.  Eventually we got him stepped down to high flow nasal cannula oxygen though.  Three days ago he transitioned even further, all the way to 2-3 liters of regular nasal cannula 02.  Well guess what? This morning, we turned off the 02 while he was asleep.  He did fine for several hours, so we removed the cannula altogether.  He has spent the entire day so far, with no respiratory support at all.  This is huge!  For the past 23 days he has needed some sort of support to breathe and maintain oxygen saturation.

He has gone from this...

to this...

to this...

to this...

and then this...

But NOT TODAY!

In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.

No oxygen needed...
He can breathe on his own...

We are calling this Miracle #5!

(to be continued...)
