Fighting Hunger in Memory of Rowan...

It's that time of year again...time to start collecting cereal for the youth in San Antonio and the surrounding area.  As many of you know, Methodist Children's Hospital has collected cereal for the San Antonio Food Bank for years. every Summer, to help with their Million Summer Meals Program.  There are so many children who count on the breakfast and lunch they receive at school, during the school year, as their main source of nutrition.  In the Summer months, when they are out of school, some go hungry without that guarantee of food.  Several years ago, while hospitalized for another very long stay at Methodist Children's Hospital, Rowan asked all his visitors to bring him a box of cereal for the food drive, instead of a toy or gift for him.  What happened next was nothing short of a miracle... he collected 1000s of servings of cereal, from his hospital bed.  He personally collected more than most of the pediatric units in the hospital.  It was amazing...and it didn't stop there.  The next 2 years, he collected cereal outside the hospital and his totals grew each Summer.  Last year, following his death, they renamed the cereal drive, the "Rowan Windham Memorial Cereal Drive".  They were able to collect over 130,000 servings last Summer, and children all over Southwest Texas, had food for their bellies each morning.

This year, the hospital is again hosting this drive, and collecting cereal June 1-8th, 2018.  There are several ways you can support this effort in Rowan's Memory once again:

  • Starting tomorrow, May 9th, I will have cereal collection boxes at several local businesses.  You can drop off your cereal all the way up to June 6th at any one of these locations, and I will deliver them to the hospital myself.  Thank you so much to each of these groups for your hearts to keep Rowan's legacy alive, and your willingness to open your businesses as cereal collection stations.  And, for everyone reading this...I highly recommend you try out both restaurants or go see a show at Woodlawn Theater.  These are some of Rowan's favorite people and were some of Rowan's favorite places to be in the world.

        • Copa Wine Bar in Stone Oak: 19141 Stone Oak Parkway, SA, TX 78258

        • Poke Planet in the Medical Center: 7302 Louis Pasteur Drive Suite 103, SA, TX 78229

        • Woodlawn Theater in the Deco District: 1920 Fredericksburg Road, SA, TX 78201

  • Comal Drug in New Braunfels: 544 North Union Avenue, NB, TX 78130

  • You can also deliver your cereal to the hospital itself during the week of June 1st through 8th.  Please just have it there by June 7th so they can tally it all before their presentation on the 8th.

  • I will come meet you if you, or your work, or church, or any other group would like to collect cereal together.  Message me here or on Facebook and we can set up a time for me to come pick up your cereal.  Again, I would need to do so by June 6th.

  • If you are not local but would like to participate you can either mail me your cereal, or make a Paypal or check donation and I will take care of it for you.  Message me here or on Facebook and I will provide you with the address or my Paypal address.

Last Year, Rowan was named Hunger Fighter of the Year for Food provided to the Food Bank, through this cereal drive.  I accepted the honor on his behalf, but I know he was looking down from heaven, and so very proud of that.  I hope we blow last years totals out of the water, and make his light shine even brighter!  Their goal this year is 150,000 servings.  I believe we can do that!

Rowan had many passions, and goals.  Helping make sure no child goes hungry was one of the biggest.  Thank you for helping us, help Methodist Children's Hospital, help the SA Food Bank, help reach that goal.

For a kid who couldn't even eat cereal, who collected cereal for other children, from a hospital bed...
Let's do this!
